Gravel & stone density (tons per cu yd)
Gravel and stone are often sold by the ton, but you calculate volume in cubic yards. To convert, multiply cubic yards by a density in tons per cubic yard. The figures below are labeled planning typicals — moisture and product change the real weight, so confirm with your supplier. Use them in the gravel and river-rock tools.
| Material | Tons per cu yd | Weight of 1 cu yd |
|---|---|---|
| Crushed gravel | 1.40 t | ~2,800 lb |
| Sand | 1.35 t | ~2,700 lb |
| Screened topsoil | 1.10 t | ~2,200 lb |
| River rock | 1.40 t | ~2,800 lb |
| Bark mulch | 0.50 t | ~1,000 lb |
tons = cu yd × density. Labeled planning typicals — moisture and product change the real weight; confirm with your supplier.
