Gravel & stone density (tons per cu yd)

Gravel and stone are often sold by the ton, but you calculate volume in cubic yards. To convert, multiply cubic yards by a density in tons per cubic yard. The figures below are labeled planning typicals — moisture and product change the real weight, so confirm with your supplier. Use them in the gravel and river-rock tools.

MaterialTons per cu ydWeight of 1 cu yd
Crushed gravel1.40 t~2,800 lb
Sand1.35 t~2,700 lb
Screened topsoil1.10 t~2,200 lb
River rock1.40 t~2,800 lb
Bark mulch0.50 t~1,000 lb

tons = cu yd × density. Labeled planning typicals — moisture and product change the real weight; confirm with your supplier.
